Artist Bio

Stephen Keokhanthachone is a true representation of the American Dream. Born in Salavan Province, Laos in 1970, he immigrated to the United States in 1979 with his family. Despite growing up in the States, Stephen never forgot his Lao heritage, the culture, and the people back home. His love for art was evident from a young age, and he pursued his passion by attending school for graphic arts. His talent and dedication led him to work for a publishing company for over 8 years before moving to Massachusetts.

In Massachusetts, Stephen met his partner, who is an art collector and dealer at Parco Fine Art, specializing in Cape Ann Artists. Through this connection, he was introduced to the artists of Cape Ann, and he was inspired to become part of this tradition of making great art. Stephen's frequent visits to museums, galleries, and art shows, along with being surrounded by great art at home, convinced him that he too wanted to leave his mark on the art world.

Stephen started painting from memory, creating art that reflected his Laotian heritage and culture with his own take on modern realism and Impressionistic style. He first painted using acrylic on PVC board, but eventually moved on to oil media on canvas. Through a self-taught period of learning by doing, Stephen developed his own technique and style, with a little bit of critique from his partner, who advised him to "burn the first 100 pieces."

Stephen first exhibited his artwork at Ipswich Illumination art shows and at shows at Parco Fine Art. While he tried to change his subject matter to more traditional New England Cape Ann school styles of painting, he found himself always coming back to the subject matter of his culture and the people. This is who he is, and this is the subject that matters most to him. "I want my artwork to be unique and represent who I am," says Stephen. "I want people to recognize my work from miles away."

In 2021, Stephen opened his first art studio at Western Art Studios in Lowell, MA, bringing his art to the multi-cultured city of Lowell. He is the first Laotian artist represented at WAS, showcasing his unique original Laotian art. His talent has been recognized by VOA (Voice of America) news media network, which is heard throughout the world, and he has since been gaining attention on social media platforms. Stephen is a member of the Ipswich Art Association, and his art continues to inspire and captivate audiences all over the world.

Stephen Keokhanthachone's story is a testament to the power of hard work, dedication, and passion. He is a true artist at heart, and his art reflects his unique perspective and experiences. Stephen's artwork is not just a reflection of his culture, but also a celebration of it. His work is a reminder of the beauty and diversity of our world, and the importance of preserving and sharing our unique cultural heritage.
